Once, Goddess Parvati created a beautiful boy out of sandalwood paste to guard her while she took a bath. She infused life into the boy and named him Ganesha. She instructed Ganesha not to allow anyone to enter the chamber while she was bathing. Meanwhile, Lord Shiva returned from his meditation and tried to enter the chamber. Ganesha, unaware that Shiva was his father, stopped him as per his mother's instructions. This angered Shiva, and in a fit of rage, he beheaded Ganesha with his trident (trishul).
Upon hearing Parvati's cries, the gods rushed to the scene. They found Ganesha's headless body and tried to pacify Parvati. Lord Brahma suggested that they find the head of the first living being they encountered and place it on Ganesha's body to bring him back to life. The gods set out on their mission and came across an elephant. They took the elephant's head and placed it on Ganesha's body. Lord Shiva then breathed life into Ganesha, and he was revived with an elephant head. Pleased with Ganesha's devotion and bravery, Shiva made him the leader of his troops and blessed him with several powers. He also granted Ganesha the boon that he would be worshipped before all other gods and that all auspicious beginnings would be made in his name.
Vignakarta, meaning "the creator of obstacles," is another name for Ganesha. It signifies his role as the remover of obstacles. It is believed that Ganesha creates obstacles in the path of those who are arrogant or misguided but helps them overcome these obstacles when they approach him with humility and devotion.
