…excerpt from Guru Aum Sushant Ji’s Book – Shiva’s Blessings: The Secrets of Rudraksha
Once upon a time, the gods Brahma (the creator) and Vishnu (the preserver) were engaged in a dispute over who was the supreme deity. Both claimed to be superior, and the argument escalated into a fierce battle. Their divine powers caused turbulence in the entire universe, disturbing the balance of creation.
At that moment, a massive pillar of light—Jyotirlinga, an infinite column of fire—appeared between them. The pillar was so tall that it seemed to stretch beyond the heavens, and its depth appeared to plunge into the core of the earth.
Both Brahma and Vishnu were amazed and decided to investigate the origin of this pillar of light to determine whose power was greater.
- Vishnu took the form of a boar (Varaha) and dug deep into the earth, trying to find the base of the pillar.
- Brahma, on the other hand, took the form of a swan (Hamsa) and flew high into the sky, attempting to locate the top of the pillar.
Both gods searched for an immeasurable amount of time, but neither could find the end of the pillar. The pillar was infinite, without a beginning or an end, representing Shiva’s Nirakar Roop—the formless, boundless entity that transcends the physical world.
Finally, Vishnu acknowledged his inability to find the end of the pillar and returned, humbly accepting that the force was beyond his comprehension.
Brahma, however, falsely claimed to have found the top of the pillar. To prove his point, he presented a Ketaki flower as a witness, saying it had fallen from the top of the pillar. At this moment, Shiva manifested from the Jyotirlinga as a radiant, formless entity and exposed Brahma’s lie.
Angered by Brahma’s dishonesty, Shiva cursed him, stating that henceforth Brahma would not be worshipped in temples on earth. This is why there are very few temples dedicated to Lord Brahma today.
Vishnu, however, was blessed by Shiva for his honesty and humility. Shiva revealed that the pillar of light was his formless self, the Nirguna Brahman, beyond the comprehension of any god or human. He is not bound by form, space, or time—he is the eternal truth, the Nirakar.
