Goddess Durga (Mahisasuramardini)
Mahishasura, a fearsome half-buffalo demon, engaged in rigorous penance to win the favor of Brahma, the creator. After years of devoted worship, Brahma finally appeared before him.
Eager to gain immortality, Mahishasura beseeched Brahma for such a boon. However, Brahma, recognizing the universal truth of mortality, denied his request.
Undeterred, Mahishasura cleverly asked for a different boon – he asked to be invincible against any male opponent, believing that women were powerless and incapable of defeating him. Granting his wish, Brahma disappeared, and Mahishasura’s reign of terror began.
Mahishasura unleashed his fury upon innocent beings, capturing the heavenly realm of Svarga and instilling fear in the hearts of all. Faced with this dire situation, the gods sought the aid of the divine Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Uniting their cosmic energies, they created Adi Shakti, embodying their collective power. Adi Shakti manifested as Durga, a formidable warrior with multiple arms.
Bestowed with divine weapons and riding upon a lion, gifted by the personification of the Himalayas, Durga descended to confront ahishasura.
Mahishasura, underestimating the power of the feminine, took on various monstrous forms and attacked the goddess. Yet, with each assault, Durga fearlessly vanquished his manifestations. Finally, in a pivotal moment, Durga impaled Mahishasura with her trident as he transformed into a buffalo demon, ending his evil reign.
The tale of Durga’s victory inspires devotees to face challenges with courage, overcome adversity, and invoke the divine energy within hemselves to vanquish the demons of their own lives.
Rahu & Ketu
Long ago, the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) desired to attain the elixir of immortality, known as Amrita. To obtain it, they decided to churn the cosmic ocean, which required them to use Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope.
As the churning began, a divine chariot emerged from the ocean, drawn by horses. Within the chariot sat a mystical being named Mohini, an enchanting female form of Lord Vishnu. Mohini took charge of distributing the Amrita to the Devas.
One Asura named ‘Swarbhanu’, disguised himself as a Deva and managed to sit amongst them to receive the elixir. However, the Sun god Surya and the Moon god Chandra noticed his deception and alerted Lord Vishnu. Vishnu swiftly severed Swarbhanu’s head before the Amrita reached his throat.
The severed head became Rahu, and the body became Ketu. They were granted immortal existence but were forever separated from their desired immortality. Hence, Rahu and Ketu are known as the “shadow planets” in Vedic astrology. Rahu is depicted as a head without a body, representing illusion, desires, materialism, and obsession. It is associated with worldly desires and ambitions, and its influence can bring both positive and negative outcomes in one’s life.
On the other hand, Ketu is depicted as a headless body, symbolizing detachment, spirituality, and liberation. It represents renunciation, selflessness, and the transcendence of worldly attachments. Ketu’s influence can bring introspection, enlightenment, and spiritual growth.
