“एकोविंशतिमुखं रुद्राक्षं कुबेरधिदैवतं स्मृतम्।
त्रैलोक्यलाभदं पुण्यं सर्वारोग्यप्रदायकम्॥”

In ancient times, during the early days of KaliYuga, great kings and merchants were losing their wealth due to greed, ego, and karmic debts from past lives. Even though they performed yajnas and donations, their prosperity did not last, and their inner peace was lost.
Among them was a great Yaksha devotee named Suraṇḍha, a merchant-king who once ruled over the trade routes of the Himalayan passes. Despite possessing great wealth, he remained constantly anxious and dissatisfied. Seeking divine help, he gave up all his riches and began deep penance (तपस्या) at the base of Mount Kailash, invoking Lord Shiva with the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and fasting for 21 days.

On the 21st night, Lord Shiva appeared to him in a blazing form and spoke:

“O Suraṇḍha! You have passed the test of inner renunciation. I bless you with this most rare and divine 21 Mukhi Rudraksha. It contains the full power of Lord Kubera, the treasurer of the heavens, and Lord Dhanvantari, the celestial healer. This Rudraksha will bring to your life unshakable wealth, health, spiritual elevation, and protection from all evils.”

Suraṇḍha wore the Rudraksha and returned to his kingdom. His trade flourished again — not just with gold and silver, but also with wisdom, dharma, and compassion. He established temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Kubera across the land. It is said his dynasty prospered for 21 generations, untouched by famine or conflict.
