According to the Shiva Purana and Linga Purana, the story of the Shivling is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and symbolizes the cosmic principles of creation and destruction. One popular legend describes how Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu once had a heated argument about their supremacy. To resolve their dispute, Lord Shiva appeared before them in the form of a huge column of fire, stretching infinitely in both directions.
